France Ligue 1 Betting: Marseille and PSG set for weekend of contrasting fortunes

Lorient v PSG (7th v 1st)
Sat, 16:00 GMT

PSG are easily Ligue 1's strongest side but there are good reasons to believe Lorient will trouble them this weekend.
First, Lorient go into the game in excellent form: since the start of September their record is W5-D3-L1.
Second, Lorient are in fine scoring form. They have netted 20 times in that excellent nine-game run since the start of September and showed how dangerous they can be even when they are below-strength by putting four goals past Troyes (4-1) a fortnight ago even though star summer signing Majeed Waris was suspended (as he will be this weekend).
PSG have built up such a big lead (10pts) at the top of Ligue 1 they can afford to pick and choose their games and will already have one eye on next Wednesday's Champions League fixture at Malmo.
It is hard to make a case for Lorient winning but given their form and confidence they are worth backing to score and to make this a difficult evening for PSG.

Rennes v Bordeaux (8th v 11th)
Sun, 16:00 GMT
Live on BT Sport 2

Rennes and Bordeaux are two of Ligue 1's most frustrating sides but I suspect they will serve up entertainment this weekend.
Rennes frustrate because they could deliver much more if only coach Philippe Montanier could get his most talented players to play well at the same time, something that rarely happens.
Bordeaux frustrating because their inability to cope with the dual challenge of competing in Ligue 1 and the Europa League continues to handicap them.
On their day, however, these two sides are capable of producing some fine attacking football. Rennes' Ivory Coast centre-forward Giovanni Sio (four goals in 12 appearances at a rate of a goal every 243 minutes this season) is one of Ligue 1's most underrated strikers, while France international winger Paul-Georges Ntep is due to return from injury and could make an impact as a substitute.
Bordeaux ran out 3-1 winners over Monaco a fortnight ago thanks to scoring three times in 13 minutes, a testament to what they can do when their focus is right.
Both teams have scored in nine of Rennes' 13 matches and eight of Bordeaux's 13 matches this season. Back this game to follow that trend.

St Etienne v Marseille (5th v 13th)
Sun, 20:00 GMT
Live on BT Sport Europe / BT Sport Extra 2

If you look at the league table there's little sense in opposing St Etienne this weekend. But this game is all about team news.
St Etienne striker Robert Beric has been ruled out for the season, midfielder Fabien Lemoine is missing and right-back Kevin Theophile-Catherine has been out since late August. St Etienne have problems at centre-back, too: Florentin Pogba and Moustapha Bayal Sall - the two main contenders to partner the excellent Loic Perrin - are both absent, meaning St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier will have to field a rookie or play someone out of position.
Marseille will be close to full strength. Centre-back Nicolas Nkoulou, holding midfielder Lassana Diarra, playmaker Remi Cabella and right winger Romain Alessandrini all return after missing Marseille's 1-0 home defeat to Nice a fortnight ago. Of their automatic starters only left-back Benjamin Mendy is missing.
St Etienne may be 7pts above Marseille in the standings but looking at the two line-ups likely to take to the field on Sunday night Marseille will be as strong as the hosts. Support the visitors on the Asian handicap or back the draw.

Champions League Tipsheet: Barca to come unstuck at San Siro

Inter are in the best form of the Luciano Spalletti era and can upset Barcelona at San Siro on Tuesday, says James Horncastle... Intergalactic Inter v Barcelona Tuesday, 20:00 Live on BT Sport/ESPN Inter  could not go into Tuesday night's clash with Barcelona in better form. This weekend's 5-0 win against Genoa was their seventh in a row in the league and it built on the team's best performance of the season, a 3-0 dismantling of Lazio last Monday. Inter are hitting heights they have previously not reached in 18 months under Spalletti. The team is playing good football, boasts the  best defence in Serie A  and lost causes like Dalbert, Roberto Gagliardini and Joao Mario are suddenly contributing to decisive effect. Saturday's victory served to underline once again that Inter are  no longer dependent on Mauro Icardi for goals . The Argentine was able to put his feet up and keep himself fresh for Barcelona without his absence impacting negatively on th...
