You would think Alexandre Lacazette, Adrien Rabiot, Kingsley Coman, Laurent Koscielny, Dimitri Payet, Karim Benzema and Anthony Martial were all now contractually obliged to spend their summers making traps out of Meccano for Joe Pesci and that other bloke, such has been the reaction.
When the dust settles, though, attentions must turn to the players who did make Didier Deschamps' final 23. The question now is this: are Les Bleus good for more than just a few guaranteed retweets?
The youth vote
The first thing that stands out when you look at Deschamps' selection is its youthful vim: with the average age just 26, this is a group full of energy, drive and potential. "Less experience, more ambition," is how Deschamps put it, and there's certainly something crowd-pleasing about a squad that includes the combined forces of Kylian Mbappé, Thomas Lemar, Ousmane Dembélé, Nabil Fekir, Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann.
Those players will also have to take leadership responsibility, too. With Koscielny out, Baywatch superfan Adil Rami only destined for the bench and the remaining elder statesmen (Hugo Lloris, Blaise Matuidi, Olivier Giroud) not known for their rabble-rousing abilities, some of the entertainers will also have to be generals.
Didi? Yes he did
Which brings us to the old watercarrier himself. Deschamps will celebrate his six-year anniversary as manager during the tournament, and it is tempting to think that Russia will make or break his legacy in the eyes of the French public.
The 49-year-old can rightly point to the progress made since 2012. France were a hot mess when he took over, the wounds of the South Africa World Cup campaign still festering and an underwhelming Euro 2012 campaign fresh in the memory. Deschamps' no-nonsense approach to the job helped restore a bit of dignity, and performances at Brazil 2014 and Euro 2016 were encouraging.
Yet France were unable to get over the line two years ago despite home advantage, and his critics would argue that this side still has a soft underbelly. The 3-2 friendly reversal against Colombia earlier this year set a few alarm bells ringing, and there remains some uncertainty over which system gets the best out of key men; fans of tedious debates about Pogba's best position may want to give the French media a swerve for a few weeks.
Up, up and away
France have reason to be very, very happy about the group-stage draw. Australia look about as dangerous as as a candy-floss cutlass; Peru are without main man Paolo Guerrero; and Denmark look dependent on Christian Eriksen. It would be a major surprise were Deschamps' men to fail to progress to the last 16.
From there, assuming some momentum has been built, a possible route to the semi-finals would see them face Croatia and Portugal, their 2016 nemeses. On talent alone, they would be favourites for both of those games, meaning the last four - and a second airing for all of that timeless absentee #content - could beckon.
Alternatively, it could all end in comedy infighting - a patchwork of public barbs about Giroud's class-favourite status, Florian Thauvin's tuxedo addiction and the comfort of Julian Assange's bedding at the Ecuadorian embassy. Either way: fun!
